Yellowstone River

Yellowstone River above the Upper FallsYellowstone seems to have just about every landscape type – mountains, rivers, meadows, forests, canyons, hot springs, geysers, volcanos. It is just fabulously amazing to drive around the park. What a national treasure.

Kathy & I stopped at the “Brink of the Upper Falls” of the Yellowstone River as we started our trip home. A short hike from the parking lot brought us to an observation deck at the very brink of the falls. Look left to see the river below the falls. Look down to see the water going over the edge. Look right and you see a scene such this one shown.

Our stop was peaceful until a tour bus arrived and the observation deck suddenly became very crowded. Obviously a popular spot! When you go, if you can arrange it, go during the off season – unless you really like large crowds.

Mmmm-Mmmm Good

A Buffalo with his tongue sticking out.One thing for sure – There are LOTS of Buffalo in Yellowstone!

Today is a dreary, cloudy, drizzly day here in NE so I am at my desk working through the large collection of shots from our Wyoming trip. As I said above, Yellowstone has lots of Buffalo, so I have lots of pictures of Buffalo – individuals, families, herds, territorial disputes. Here is just one of the more fun pictures. The grass he was grazing on must have been fabulously good!

Pictures to come include Black Bear, Moose, Elk, Chipmunk, Mule Deer, Pronghorn, Prairie Dog, and a few others that I don’t remember right now.

I See You!

My Grandson with binocularsKathy & I had a fabulous few days in September when we joined up with my daughter, son-in-law, and grandkids. We stayed in a rented condo just outside of the Grand Teton National Park.

One of the days we drove into Yellowstone National Park to view Old Faithful. At a quick stop to admire the landscape and my grandson was busy trying out a pair of binoculars. I think he had them attached to his eyes for the whole visit – inside, outside, in bed… you get the idea!

Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks are fabulous. I will share more photos of the trip as I get through the many shots I took.

Where the Buffalo Roam…

On our trip into Jackson, WY, on our way to meet my daughter and the grandkids, Kathy & I came around a bend in the road and found many cars parked along both sides of the road. We quickly learned that this meant there was something to view/photograph in the vicinity. This time, it was a herd of buffalo – maybe 30 – grazing alongside the road and on the road at times.closeup profile of an buffalo, a.k.a. bison

We were on the opposite side of the highway from the buffalo and Kathy – who was driving – stopped behind the string of parked cars. Before I got out she set the ground rules for this photo shoot. I was to keep the car between me and the buffalo at all times! I eagerly agreed, grabbed my camera, a beanbag support, and out the passenger door I went. I laid the beanbag on the hood of the car and proceeded to fill my camera’s memory card. At first I shot general pictures of the herd, but quickly moved to focusing on profiles and closeups of individual animals.

I was totally focused on what I was doing when I heard loud banging on our car’s windshield. I looked up and Kathy was frantically pointing to a buffalo that had crossed the road and now there was nothing between it and me. I needed no further persuading. I grabbed the beanbag and camera and quickly crawled back into the car. We were amazed and quite worried that so many of the people were out of their cars and walking much closer to these animals than they should have. We left before anything bad happened.

I really like this picture of one of the “elders” of the herd. Buffalo are such majestic animals. We saw many buffalo during our time in the Yellowstone area. They always commanded the right-of-way when they were on or near the roads. Awesome.

Yellowstone Lower Falls

One of the few non-wildlife photo-op stops we made while in Yellowstone National Park was at the overlook of the Lower Falls in Yellowstone Canyon. It is a magnificent site. We stopped late in the day so a lot of the canyon was shrouded in shade. I made a 5-stop bracket shot with an HDR (High Dynamic Range) composite in mind. I just keep experimenting and having fun with photography.

A view of Yellowstone's Lower Falls looking up the canyon toward the falls

These falls are nothing like I imagine Niagara Falls to be (Haven’t been there yet.) But I am sure I would not want to go over these falls either in a barrel!

It was amazing to see the trees that were going along the canyon walls and the rocks they were growing out of. Talk about tenacity.

Aspens in Fall Colors

September is rapidly drawing to a close. What a month this has been. I turned 65 and received 2 pay cuts! Medicare took its cut of my Social Security check and the USAF took another bite out of my retirement check with increased Insurance costs. But…

Kathy & I spent a wonderful week driving out to Yellowstone National Park, spending 3 days with our grandkids (and their parents too). Saw lots of wildlife on the way out to the park, while in the park, and on the way home. On the drive home it was hard not to turn around and go back. It was such a wonderful time away from large crowds of people.

Am working through the large quantity of pictures I amassed on the trip. Here are a couple that I have gotten to so far. As you can see, the Aspens were starting to turn to their fabulous fall colors.

We came by a Prairie Dog Town as we drove through Custer State Park in South Dakota on the way home. This little guys (and gals) seemed as intrigued with me as I was with them. Kathy spotted this couple sitting up  keeping an eye on us. They posed for me for several clicks before going back into their home.

More to come in the days ahead. If you have never visited Yellowstone NP, you really should put it on your bucket list. Have a fabulous day and week.

Virginia Morning

My usual place at sunrise is in bed under the covers. Well, this particular morning I made an exception. Kathy & I were in Abingdon, VA, recently. She was working with a client and I was ……. not! I made an exception this morning and was blessed with several great photo ops (photography opportunities).

Barn with out buildings and cattle

On my way to a local wildlife spot (Sidebar: I love the “BirdsEye” app for my iPhone/iPad. It identifies places around wherever one might be where birds have been sighted, which species, how long ago, etc.) I dove by this scene. I turned around and went back to spend some time making a few clicks. This has to be one of the definitions of “peaceful.”

Ahhh Cheesecake

There is no finer dessert than cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory Restaurant – except maybe bread pudding, or sour cream raisin pie, or German chocolate cake, or … but I digress….

A week or so ago Kathy & I stopped at the Cheesecake Factory in Omaha, NE, for lunch. No meal is complete there without some cheesecake. I have my favorite and don’t even bother to look at the menu, but this day was different. I overheard our waiter telling the diners in the booth next to us about a new cheesecake offering – the …

OREO® Dream Extreme Cheesecake

OREO® Cookies baked in our creamy Cheesecake with layers of fudge cake and OREO® Cookie mousse. Topped with a milk chocolate icing.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and maybe ten thousand calories, BUT it was fabulous! I hope they make it a regular menu item….
