Sound Advice…

Don't feed alligator signNow that is indeed “sound Advice!” Kathy & I have been in Lafayette, LA, for the past few days. Kathy is attending a project management workshop and I am attending to my Wildlife photography. This picture was snapped in the Palmetto State Park south of Lafayette. It is a beautiful park With cabins and tent camping, boating, and plenty of hiking trails. I did no hiking today as the heat index was 101 degrees around 10:30 AM.

I think most of the wildlife were in their respective air conditioned bunkers watching “The Price is Right.” Although, there may have been the occasional alligator lurking around in the area shown in the picture below.

Swamp areaOn my way down to the park I passed the Rip van Winkle Gardens. Another beautiful area, but I’m not much into walking through gardens when the temperature is in the upper 90s. I did stop along the entrance road to snap a couple of quick clicks of the Moss Oaks in the morning sunlight. Just awesome.

Moss Oak TreesThe one bird I was hoping to get some closeup pictures of – the Roseate Spoonbill – successfully hid from me the entire trip. Thought about a swamp tour. Talked with one of the tour captains. He said that January and February are the best times to take a tour as they have permission to go into the rookeries where one can see/photograph nesting birds, etc. So… another item goes into my Bucket List (I’m getting to the point where I have more “list” than I have “bucket!”).

I’m outta here!!

Kathy & I just returned from a fabulous few days with my sister and her family, my oldest daughter and her family at my sister and her husband’s new lake home. It was sort of a mini-family reunion. People came from Germany, Idaho, North Dakota, Nebraska, and Minnesota.

Life on the water is stupendous! “If you’re lucky enough to live at the beach, you’re lucky enough!” The weather was perfect and lots of time was spent on the beach and in the water.

One of my Nieces decided to take her dog – Arson – for a ride on her wake board (waveboard? whatever). Arson was none to sure about the idea, but sat nervously on the board in front of my Niece. That is… until he was close enough to shore to be able to swim to “safety.” All of a sudden Arson was airborne! He jumped off the board and swam for the beach. As you can see, Arson’s sudden departure left my Niece airborne as well.

We had a wonderful few days remembering days gone by and family members no longer with us. I collected more data for the genealogy work I am consumed with.

I wish you all a very happy Independence Day! Enjoy your picnics and celebrate safely, but remember too what this day means to our country.

L’Eggo My …

LEGO®s. Kathy & I took a road trip to Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha, NE, yesterday. It was one of the last days for an exhibition of LEGO® creations. There were 16 creations settled in amongst the plants, water features, trees, etc. It was walking around and trying to picture how someone put together over 50,000 LEGO®s to create the American Bison (a.k.a. Buffalo).

The hummingbird, bee, butterfly, and dragon fly were just a bit bigger than life size. Here are some quick shots of many of the items that were on display…

Migration Wonders

This Spring has been quite an exciting time in our neighborhood. The weather can’t make up its mind – Winter? Summer?…

A week ago we set a record for the all time low temperature on that date. Two days later (no kidding) we set an all time record high for that date. 26 to 106. What a ride.

The birds don’t seem to mind too much – especially when we keep the feeders full. The Baltimore Orioles love the grape jelly and orange halves we set out. We also have Catbirds, Brown-headed Cowbirds, American Goldfinches, Robins, Wrens, the occasional Woodpecker, Sparrows, Grackles  and Mourning Doves – and that’s just in our backyard.

American Avocets along the shore

The American Avocets you see here were along the shore of the reservoir for the power plant in town. It’s a great place to drive around and occasionally produces a few photo opportunities. There were about a dozen Avocets on the day we were there.

Gotta Love Computers

The world is safe from computers and Artificial Intelligence until a computer is invented that does what I wanted it to do and not what I told it to do.  :-S

ENIAC Computer installation

Somewhere along the way, I managed to mess up the subscriber email list – the one which notifies you when I post a new photo – thank you for your interest!! So…. I have added back those names that I remember were on the old list. If you wish not to be on the list anymore –  – just unsubscribe – I’ll miss you!

If you wish to subscribe, but did not get this email, please subscribe!!

It’s a rainy Monday in Nebraska – but that’s ok because tomorrow we’ll have snow!!

Have a great week…

Infrequent Visitor

During the Spring migrations we usually see large flocks of American White Pelicans on their way to their breeding grounds. Normally they just fly on by. If they do stop over in our area it is usually at a very large power company reservoir north of town. Last year a flock of about 60 did stop on the large portion of our lake for about 20 minutes but then they were gone.

So, it was with great pleasure, that, arriving home from a day-trip to Lincoln, there was a lone pelican swimming in the lake in front of our house. It was late in the day and the setting sun was shining directly on the bird. It, with its breeding “horn-like plate” on top of its bill, swam back and forth posing for me (or maybe just teasing me) but it just wouldn’t come in for its “close-up.” This bird stayed until the sun was down and the light had faded. It returned briefly the next day, but I have not seen it since.

American White Pelican swimming.

Maybe pelicans don’t stop on our lake because of a lack of fish. On-the-therhand we do have large numbers of Double-Crested Cormorants – they seem to like the fishing a lot. The local fishermen do not like the cormorants!

I look forward to seeing who will show up tomorrow. It’s a wonderful world!

I Can’t Believe I Ate the Whole Thing!

Our first morning at the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island, Florida, was quite exciting and very productive – photos-wise. We arrived just in time to join a “follow me” tour of the refuge’s main viewing areas. With our guide in a little electric car we followed behind in our cars. He stopped at many good viewing places, we would park behind him, get out, set up, and click away while he told us some interesting factoids about what we were witnessing.

The first excitement came while watching a Great Blue Heron have breakfast. The heron had speared a rather large fish in another part of the lake, but while trying to dine – alone – on it the pelicans crashed his party and tried to take the fish away. The heron wasn’t in a sharing mood so it flew to the secluded spot along the roadside. (First picture) – fish still well in hand…err bill.

After making sure he lost the pelicans and was again alone (except for 30 onlookers and probably as many cameras), he maneuvered the fish for easier dining. He flipped the fish into the air and then caught it in a slightly different orientation – more inline with his throat. I think the heron must have speared this fish – note the hole in the fish’s side. (Second picture)…

…Open wide. After several flips the fish was “headed in the right direction” he opened wide. Breakfast just started sliding in. Note the fish’s tail waving above the heron’s bill. (Third Picture)

And…Breakfast is served! “I can’t Believe I Ate The Whole Thing.” — Neither can I!

Blue Heron finishing off fishWow! It was several minutes before his neck returned to “normal” and he flew off for a morning “snack.”

We then proceeded on to the next viewing area…

It’s Not a Bird…It’s Not a Plane…

It’s an Armadillo!

My planned updates from our “Coastal” trip were sidelined for about a week while I waited to get my computer repaired! Sat down one night to review and post some of the day’s photos when what did my eyes perceive…Green Neon flashing at me from all of the dark areas of my screen.  Went to a local Apple Store. they determined I needed a new display. Finally back up and running.

Anyway – when Kathy & I were at a local National Wildlife Refuge looking for wildlife we saw nothing close enough to photograph. However, on the way out of the refuge, I spotted something on the side of the road. It was in fact, an Armadillo. Got a few quick clicks while he was crossing the road. Amazing.

Armadillo

Wonder what I will see around the next bend in the road. Have a fabulous day!
